Learn how to better manage your software development process with Git, a versioning tool and repository.

Managing software development in addition to a research portfolio may seem like a daunting challenge at times, yet there are simple tools that can make the process much easier. For decades, the coding community has used software engineering best practices to create reliable code, improve collaborations, quickly troubleshoot bugs, and more. Versioning tools such as Git are at the heart of these processes, and they offer far more value than just being code repositories.In this one-hour workshop, attendees will learn about software engineering best practices that can improve collaboration and troubleshooting issues with code. They will get an overview of Git and learn fundamental concepts of managing code that every developer should know. Attendees will leave with a better understanding of why they should use versioning tools, as well as a better understanding of commonly used Git commands and functions.Topics include:<ul><li>Developing software using best practices</li><li>How to interact with local and remote repositories</li><li>Tracking history of a development project for better understandability</li><li>Using workflows and branching</li><li>Hosting on GitLab, a user-friendly web interface available to the Penn State community</li><li>Obtaining statistics from a repository</li></ul>
