The West Asian and North African Women’s Art Library Opens Exhibition channeling Etel Adnan’s Poetry in LondonThe West Asian and North African Women’s Art Library (WANAWAL) announces its inaugural exhibition titled Beyond A Reasonable Doubt co-curated by Zainab Hasoon and Sara bin Safwan. Opening with a multidisciplinary and multisensory public program on November 18th at Reference Point, London, the exhibition features six contemporary artists channeling the poetry of the late painter and poet, Etel Adnan. Beyond a Reasonable Doubt looks at the ways in which we preserve meaning and memories across time - whether in objects, feelings, places or people. The exhibition takes its premise from the first book to be acquired into WANAWAL’s special collection, which will be permanently housed at Reference Point, titled The Spring Flowers Own &amp; Manifestations of the Voyage by Etel Adnan. Throughout the book, she poetically captures the simplicities and complexities of the human experience. Through Adnan’s words, we enter an eternal dream-state where neither the past, present or geography exists. How do we preserve or archive the feelings that come with a specific time and place? The exhibition features artists Lulua Alyahyha, Juline Hadaya, Ghad ElMajid, Malak ElGhuel, Sophia Al Maria, Shamiran Istifan. The selected work has either been influenced or created as a response to Adnan&#x27;s poetry. Together, they explore the nuances of memory, sentimentality, affinities and preservation through various mediums such as sound, video, painting, drawing, sculpture and installation.The exhibition opening features a public program that includes culinary and sonic experiences. Chef and artist Sally Hakmi will offer a culinary presentation introducing an array of dishes through communal sharing. The evening continues with experimental sonic performances by London-based artists Gisou, AZADI.mp3, Marcelina with Anastasia and Bint7alal.AboutCuratorsSara bin Safwan is a Curator for Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and the Founder of Banat Collective. She is currently pursuing her MA in Postcolonial Culture and Global Policy at Goldsmiths University, London. Her research and practice explores geopolitics of the Arab region, art as resistance and decolonial theory with a focus on contemporary art from West Asia and North Africa, particularly the Gulf. Sara recently has co-curated As We Gaze Upon Her, Abu Dhabi and is curating the upcoming Homebound Residency, both at Warehouse421. Zainab Hasoon is a multidisciplinary artist and independent curator based in Dubai. Her practice centers around the multifunctionality of space, archival and found material and experiments in film, art, fashion, jewellery and music. Zainab is the Founder and Creative Director of kenz and works at Shabab Intl. Recently founded music platform 7aflet, Zainab continues to curate using different spaces, mediums and hosting underground music experiences internationally. WANAWALThe West Asian and North African Women’s Art Library (WANAWAL) is a publicly accessible archive built to collect and exhibit artwork, curatorial projects and publications by women from the West Asian and North African (WANA) region. Its purpose is to apply alternative archival methodologies, and research how geopolitical identities intersect and function within the current collective conceptions of documentation. It is founded by artist Evar Hussayni, whose multi-disciplinary practice is focused on Kurdish genealogies, the politics of memory, colonial violence in archives and their relationship with the trajectory of Kurdish feminisms, resistance and identity.Reference Point Reference Point is a library, bookshop, bar which aims to democratise rare visual literature, and provide a community space for creatives in London.
