Behind The Wall Part Three: Patch
This is part three of our three-part building series. Classes can be taken individually or as a series.
A three-part series of hands-on building classes that investigates behind walls; basic framing techniques, plumbing and electrical will be covered.
The classes are ambitious and will cover a lot of information; the goal is to provide participants with an overview of the systems in your house. Basic tool use or handiness is helpful and students can participate at a level that feels good to them.
The classes build on each other but also can be taken as just one. Participants can sign up for classes individually ($60 + Eventbrite fees) or the entire series for a 10% off discount ($162 + Eventbrite fees). Sign up here.
Please note: Tools will be provided, but participants are welcome to bring their own tool kits. Participants will sign a waiver prior to participating.
This series covers the following:
Week 1 (June 13, 3-6pm): Build
- Build a simple 4’ x 8’ wall
- Run pex (plastic plumbing lines) and hook up a spigot
- Run electric and hook up an outlet
- Install drywall
Week 2 (June 20, 3-6pm): Renovate
- “Renovate” the “finished” wall from last week to install a window
- Re-run the electric and install a junction box
- Re-pex
Week 3 (June 27, 3-6pm): Patch
- Finish anything we ran out of time with on weeks 1 and 2. Q and A
- Patch drywall (screw holes, hammer holes, saw holes)
About the teacher:
Sarah Wagner is a builder, artist, mom and neighbor. She has been a foreman on construction crews, built scientifically accurate fake plants, installed countless bathrooms, worked as a milliner at a big city opera, renovated a city block in Detroit, and built a small house on the Tennessee River hand-carrying the wood up 80 steps. She has figured out how to build a gorgeous, rich life with her family, often wearing a tool belt and knee pads and wants to pass these skills on. Sarah consults as “The Building Doula,” is a caregiver for family, does smaller construction projects for clients, and has a thriving sculpture practice.
