About this event

In an effort to create meaningful culture building moments within a Jazz context for high school and college aged musicians (as well as their band instructors), drummer/bandleader Christopher Brown will host an ongoing series entitled “Behind the Scene” with his quartet, where they'll pull back the veil of mystery that often shrouds the learning process for most students and teachers. And what will separate this event from any other like it is that it’ll combine the Jam session and clinic experience into one epic memory maker.

Throughout this event, the audience will have an opportunity to electronically submit music pdf's and an audio file to a cloud source that Christopher's band will have access to, so as to project said music to a screen where the audience will get to not only observe how this group answers the audiences' quesitions, but observe the speed with which they're able to learn said charts with the pressure of an onlooking audience. And as for the other two pillars of this event, the audience will get to not only hear his group perform their own music, but they'll get to experience what it's like to sit in with such a band in front of their peers with this level of musical support.

1:30-2:30pm Music Submissions

2:30-4pm Jam Session

Christopher Brown is a drummer and bandleader who returned home to Portland after a 17-year hiatus between the Marines, Army National Guard, and the NYC Jazz scene, to help raise the profile and demand for Jazz here in Oregon. And over the past few years, a large part of how he has been able to help move the needle in this regard has been through his deep interest in education, which includes private instruction, an appointment as Portland State University’s Jazz drum instructor, and as the director of the Metropolitan Youth Symphony’s Jazz Ensemble.

Christopher’s performance credits include:

Beyonce, Esperanza Spalding, Branford Marsalis, Wynton Marsalis, Delfeayo Marsalis, Roy

Hargrove, Ray Charles, Jimmy Heath, Ralph Bowen, Ralph Peterson Jr., Conrad Herwig, Steve Turre, Paquito D’Rivera, Benny Golson, Bobby Watson, Vincent Herring, Javon Jackson, Antonio Hart, David Sanborn, Jaleel Shaw, Geoff Keezer, James Genus, Don Alias, Victor Goines, Lonnie Plaxico, David Leibman, Sean Jones, Marquis Hill, Randy Brecker, Chuck Israels, George Colligan, Darrell Grant, Chad Lefkowitz-Brown, John Patitucci, Kamasi Washington, Aaron Goldberg, Ben Williams, Gerald Clayton, Cyrus Chestnut, Mel Brown, and many more.

*Since this event is expected to sell out, you’ll want to get your tickets here for this first of its kind experience, as there's no guarantee that space will be available for purchase at the door.

Frequently asked questions

Can I just bring sheet music to present to Christopher's Band?

No. The idea is that by having charts ready to upload from whatever device you have, it'll enable the band to cast your charts on the wall for everyone to follow along.

What kind of music should I be submitting?

Feel free to submit whatever it is that you'd like clarity on.

Is it okay to bring sheet music up on stage during the Jam session portion?

In a word, yes. However, it's highly discouraged, as the real music making happens when your eyes aren't distracted by paper. So commit to memory at least one song, and learn to explain it to others in under one minute (in the event the rest of the band doesn't know it).

Do I have to bring an instrument?

Since there's no requirement to perform, there's no requirement to bring an instrument. However, it would behoove you to at least bring something to write with and on if you want to get the most out of this event.
