Beginning Spinning 101

The Weavers Guild of Greater Cincinnati, Inc. was created in 1948 as a non-profit educational organization to promote interest in handweaving. Today, the Guild offers education in a wide range of fiber processes and techniques, including weaving, felting, spinning, basketry, knitting, and dyeing. Guild members are from the Cincinnati metropolitan area and surrounding communities, as well as from Kentucky and Indiana.Members range in experience from beginners to professionals. All benefit from the Guild's priorities: education through classes, workshops, programs, study groups; sharing information and fiber techniques with other members and community groups; and promoting and supporting local fiber producers and businesses.After 50 years of meeting in various churches throughout Greater Cincinnati, the Guild has its own home at 4870 Gray Road in Spring Grove Village.

Learn the basics of spinning and create handspun yarns for use in weaving, knitting, and crocheting.

Spinning Classes

Learn to spin different fibers into beautiful yarn using a variety of spindles and wheels.

Dates: Mondays,Sept 16, 23 and 30, 2024, 10 am – 3 pm all days. Ticket: $160. Instructor: Pat Maley. Materials fee: $15. Skills Needed: No previous skill needed. Class Limit: 5Spinning is a relaxing way to obtain yarns for use in weaving, knitting and crocheting. In this course you will learn the basics- fiber preparation, drafting, spinning wheel mechanics, parts and maintenance of a spinning wheel, and spinning on a wheel. The course includes an introduction to several fibers and a discussion of the various types of wheels. You will learn how to ply yarn and how to finish the yarn you have spun. Use our wheels, and/or bring your wheel for a checkup or tune up.Supplies to Bring:<ul><li>$15 materials fee payable to the instructor at start of class. She has been certified by Handweavers Guild of America as a Master Spinner, having completed both levels of the program. She frequently demonstrates spinning, weaving and dyeing at historical venues and pioneer festivals. She has been teaching all types of spinning at the Weaver’s Guild since the late 1980’s.Depending on the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/your-health/covid-by-county.html" title="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/your-health/covid-by-county.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">CDC guidelines</a> for Hamilton County at the time the class is held, a mask may be required. If so, you will be notified before the first class.If you are not feeling well, please contact the instructor instead of coming to the class. On a case-by-case basis, we may be able to reschedule you into a future class or provide a make-up lesson. Ticket fees are not normally refunded.Unless specifically stated, Weavers Guild classes are designed for ages 18 and above. On a case-by-case basis, a minor may be permitted to register for a class but must be accompanied by a registered adult who agrees to assist the minor during the class. Contact the Education Committee Chair at classes@weaversguildcincinnati.org for permission before registering any minor in a class.Fees are non-refundable. Your fee will only be refunded if the class is canceled or changed to a different date. Three registrations are required for a class to be held. Students will be notified before the start date if a class is canceled due to an insufficient number of students. Eventbrite processing and credit card payment fees will not be refunded if a student cancels for any reason.
