Beginning Birding

Beginning Birding

Garden for the EnvironmentSan Francisco, CA
Saturday, Mar 21 from 10 am to 12 pm
Overview

Learn about the fun, accessible activity of observing birds, particularly in urban areas. Our bird expert instructor will get you started!

Birds are all around us, even in our dense urban city. In this workshop we'll discuss the importance of birds and their ecology and how we can make our cities safer for birds and other wildlife. We'll learn how to start identifying birds and become familiar with the most common San Francisco species found here in spring. We'll tour the garden and observe the birds living there, focusing on the plants and garden features that create healthy habitats. Come and celebrate the spring equinox by learning about our winged friends!

NOTE: We encourage you to bring binoculars if possible. They will be provided if you don't have your own.

Instructor: Whitney Grover is a life-long coastal Californian, enthusiastic birder, and lover of the Bay Area's unique ecology. In 2023 she earned a Master of Science degree in Environmental Management from the University of San Francisco, with a concentration in Ecology. She is a longtime volunteer for Golden Gate Bird Alliance (GGBA) , starting as a Field Trip Leader, later Board Member, and the Chair of the San Francisco Conservation Committee. Before joining the GGBA staff in 2022, she worked in healthcare as a Hospital Pharmacy Buyer and served on the hospital's Environmental Action Committee. Whitney is a Master Birder, co-founder of the SF Bay chapter of the Feminist Bird Club, gardener, and film buff.
