Do I have to have prior martial arts experience?

Accepted Answer

Not at all! It can help with certain concepts, but it's not necessary to learn the basics of longsword!

Question 2

Who is this class geared towards?

Accepted Answer

Nerds, LARPers, people who want to get in touch with their inner knight, stage fencers, or people who really want to learn longsword. However, this is not for people wanting to go full contact immediately (like armored MMA or Buhurt); this is more sport/dueling based. Safety is paramount!

What will I learn?

You'll learn guards, cuts, footwork, and some of the history behind longsword.

Will I be using a real sword?

Accepted Answer

We start off with plastic, foam, and nylon swords for safety reasons. Once students are proficient with nylon wasters, we can help guide selecting historically-based metal sparring swords (known as Feders or Federschwerte). Sharp swords are not used or allowed.

Question 5

What if I didn't start at the beginning of the cycle? Can I still join?

Absolutely! Each day focuses on something different, and we assume most people can't make it every week.

Question 6

What if I'm the only one to sign up?

Accepted Answer

No problem! Some of the interns from our partner riding programs are always around and participating, so you won't be the only one!
