About this event

  • 7 hours

Sunday, September 8th from 9AM-4PM

In this workshop we will discuss techniques, planning a composition, and how to build a painting in gouache. Students will learn how to mix paint, how to handle it, and properties unique to gouache paint. We will begin with a demonstration and warm up exercises. After a lunch break we will begin drawing out compositions and bringing a final painting to life!

$99 workshop fee does not include materials. A supply list can be found below the instructor bio photo.

We will have an hour break for lunch between Noon-1pm. The studio will be closed during this break, but there are nearby parks where you can eat lunch if you brought your own, or you can check out one of the local restaurants in the area.

Recommended Materials (est. $40-80)

Traditional Gouache: I use Winsor & Newton Designer’s Gouache. It’s a high quality paint for

professional artist use. Holbein is great, too. You can instead purchase the CMYK colors and be

able to mix all the colors you need.

Holbein CMYK option (Average cost is $32)

OR

The Winsor & Newton Gouache Set. These are a high quality value pack that will

introduce you to the medium on a budget. (Average cost is $24)

Brushes: I particularly enjoy using the Princeton brand brushes. They are a quality brush with

soft, synthetic bristles perfect for watercolor and gouache.

The Princeton Value Brush is a great value and offers a variety of sizes. (Average cost is $26)

Surfaces: Cold press contains sizing that keeps colors bold and allows them to settle on the

surface of the board rather than sink into the paper. Hot press is smoother and better for fine

detail. Try both if you like!

1 pack of 3 Crescent No. 300 Cold Press Illustration Board - 8x10 (Average cost is $10)

Choice of 2 Hot Press sizes - Average cost is $6 - $12
