Are you interested in Art History? Do you enjoy facilitating multigenerational conversations? Docent Applications are now open! Please submit your application and join our Docent Program!

Docents at NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale are the face of the museum. They engage multigenerational audiences by developing a dialogue with touring visitors about artworks on exhibition. NSU Art Museum is seeking applicants for its 2024 Summer docent training class. The training class will acquaint you with Socratic touring techniques, aspects of art history, art criticism, and art history research tools, as well as connecting you to a thriving community of art enthusiasts.


Requirements

  • An interest in learning about and presenting information on modern and contemporary art to diverse, multigenerational audiences.
  • Must be an active museum member of NSU Art Museum.
  • Must volunteer for a minimum of two tours per month.
  • Must be able to attend each session of the docent training class, meeting in person and on zoom once a week from July through August.
  • Must complete an interview with the Curator of Education, Lisa Quinn.
  • Available to attend monthly exhibition training, lectures, and events.

Frequently asked questions

What do I get as a Docent?

We love our docents here at NSU Art Museum! Docents receive Curator Tours of new exhibitions, annual luncheon and socials, a training class with graduation, and monthly art lessons.

Do I have to pay to be a docent?

Yes, you will need to join the museum as a member in order to become a docent. Memberships start at $75.00 and receive unlimited free admission to the museum, receptions, and special events!

What are my responsibilities as a docent?

We ask docents to volunteer for at least 2 tours each month.

What does an average tour look like?

Tours can be with private groups or from our free field trip program for k-12 Broward County Public Schools. We have groups of all ages and abilities. Tours last no longer than an hour as a conversation through the galleries.
