In three sessions we will focus on the beauty &amp; importance of science graphics. With Jen Christiansen, Mesa Schumacher and Angela Morelli.

BEAUTIFUL DATAIn three sessions we will take a closer look at data visualisation. We will look at the beauty and the possibilities. And how we can make our work with data more effective. Each session will be a mix of a lecture, exercises or cases and Q&A. We have 30 spots available for each session. SEPTEMBER 15, 2022 (3:00PM - 5:00PM CEST) - SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR SCIENCE GRAPHICSScience graphics are beholden to the same design principles as other types of graphics. But the information they hold is often the product of a process that a lot of people in your audience may not be familiar with. It's important to honor the fact that the data you're presenting is both the product of a rigorous study that builds upon past studies, and that interpretations may eventually shift a bit as future research sheds more light on the topic. This session provides you with some strategies for addressing those challenges. In particular, three overarching themes that are particularly pertinent to science graphics: honoring complexity, avoiding misinformation pitfalls, and visualizing uncertainty. (Have pencils and paper handy for a short exercise).Jen Christiansen is senior graphics editor at Scientific American, where she art directs and produces illustrated explanatory diagrams and data visualizations. She began her publishing career in New York City at Scientific American in 1996, moved to Washington, D.C. to join the staff of National Geographic (first as an assistant art director/researcher hybrid and then as a designer), spent four years as a freelance science communicator, and returned to Scientific American in 2007. She holds a graduate certificate in natural science illustration from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a B.A. in geology and studio art from Smith College.SEPTEMBER 29 , 2022 (1:00pm - 3:00pm CEST) - ILLUSTRATIONS AND GRAPHIC REPRESENTATIONSIn this session, we will examine the role illustration and graphic representation play in data visualization. We'll learn a bit about the history of scientific illustration, how things have changed, and how it is being used today. We will explore cases where illustrated graphics can enhance communication, and learn to avoid common missteps which can obscure messages. We will examine different types of drawings and how they can help visualize the unseen, or convey difficult concepts, and look at how a scientific illustrator goes about constructing a graphic - things one must consider to balance accuracy and understanding. The session will include two interactive sessions where participants will explore the process and design of explanatory graphics.Mesa Schumacher is a medical and science artist, and founder of Mesa Studios, a boutique science visualization company. While earning a science degree at Stanford University, Mesa became disillusioned of the world of research, but discovered her vocation in scientific illustration. She went on to earn a Graduate Certificate in Scientific Illustration from the University of Washington and a Masters in Biological and Medical Illustration from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Mesa works with academic, business, and editorial clients developing illustrations, animations and infographics. Her graphic collaborations with National Geographic have earned many honors from Malofiej and the Society for News Design.OCTOBER 13, 2022 (3:00pm - 5:00pm CEST) - DESIGNING FOR IMPACTCreating scientifically rigorous and user-friendly data visualisations can play a critical role in making complex information more accessible to wider audiences and supporting informed decision-making. 'Co-design' encapsulates a way of approaching data visualisation that ensures a deep and shared understanding between those creating the visuals (e.g. information designers, content experts, cognitive scientists) and the audience. Angela will reflect on her journey of co-designing data visualizations in science, where visual information can help disentangle complex issues, resolve challenges, help make important decisions and, ultimately, inspire change. Angela Morelli is the CEO and co-founder of InfoDesignLab. From climate change to health, she has worked with a wide range of scientific organisations and professionals including the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the European Environment Agency, the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, the Center for Climate Research in Norway and the World Meteorological Organization. Angela gained her MA in Information Design from Central Saint Martins in London. She is a lecturer and an international speaker. She was awarded the Il Monito del Giardino Award in 2013 and was named a 2012 Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum thanks to her commitment in communicating the science of Water Footprint through information design and data visualisation.REGISTRATIONYou can register for all three sessions, but you also choose to join only one or two sessions. There is a discount if you register for all sessions. All registrations are final. There is no refund. You can however tranfer the ticket to someone else.
