BEAUTIFUL DATAIn three sessions we will take a closer look at data visualisation and information design. We will look at the beauty and the possibilities. And how we can make our work with data more effective.Each session will be a mix of a lecture, exercises or cases and Q&amp;A. We have 30 spots available for each session.In this edition of BEAUTIFUL DATA the focus is on design systems. MARCH 14, 2024 (3:00pm – 5:00pm CET) - MATTEO MORETTI - VISUAL METAPHORSWhen we talk about a design system, we refer to a unified system that supports a project's consistency. Every detail, from fonts to interactions, colours to shapes, contributes to a cohesive and effective visual story. The more thoughtfully designed the system is, the more seamlessly it functions as an organism, engaging and immersing its audience. One of the most effective tools for achieving this is the use of visual metaphors.Visual metaphors can be a powerful answer to creating a successful design system. By using examples and small exercises, participants can learn how all the visual elements that make up a project can be traced back to the same visual metaphor. As a result, these elements become a part of it, informing and elevating the entire visual system underlying a data visualisation project. So, if you want to make your project stand out and captivate your audience, "visual metaphors" are the answer.Bio: Matteo Moretti is an Associate Professor at DADU of the University of Sassari and guest professor at Master in Data Design of Elisava in Barcelona. He's also a founding partner of Sheldon.studio, where he researches the forms of social design from a digital perspective based on quantitative and qualitative data. MARCH 28, 2024 (4:00PM – 6:00PM CET) – AMY CESAL - DATAVIZ STYLE GUIDESData visualisation style guides offer a standard for organisations in how to design and represent information, like colour, fonts, charts and tables. In this session we will look at the what, why and how of style guides.Join Amy Cesal, a pioneer for the use of dataviz style guides, and get insight in:<ul><li>what data visualisation style guides are and why you need one</li><li>how to extend brand identity to data visualisation</li><li>data visualisation style guide case studies</li><li>resources for building out data visualisation style guides</li><li>an individual activity creating a chart with different visual styles</li></ul>Bio: Amy Cesal is a data visualizer, freelance consultant, strategist and educator based in Chicago, IL. She is the product evangelist at everviz. She co-founded the Data Visualization Society, and currently serves on the advisory council. Amy's unusual data visualisation work garnered her three Information is Beautiful Awards. She holds a Master's Degree in Information Visualisation from MICA, where she teaches in the Data Analytics and Visualisation master's program. APRIL 11, 2024 (3:00PM – 5:00PM CEST) – MORITZ STEFANER - DATA DESIGN SYSTEMSThere is a method to the madness: many of our most creative and out-of-the-box data visualisation projects actually have a very rigorous process, mapping and design system behind them. In fact, one could argue that a big part of the appeal of data visualisation is exactly that constant push and pull between just the right amounts of order and chaos.As a self-employed Truth &amp; Beauty Operator, Moritz Stefaner has worked on a variety of data visualisations projects and will share some of his lessons and techniques for a systemic approach to data visualisation design. In particular, we will get a peak behind the scenes of data design language projects, learn how to scale from a single project to a whole suite of applications and how to effortlessly manage data design decisions for use in design and code tools alike using Design Tokens.Bio: Moritz Stefaner keeps chasing the perfect shape for information. With a background in Cognitive Science and Interface Design, his work beautifully balances analytical and aesthetic aspects in mapping complex phenomena to support data–driven decision making. Moritz has helped many clients to find insights and beauty in large data sets. As the co-host of the Data Stories podcast, and sought-after keynote speaker and workshop facilitator, Moritz continues to excite more and more people about the magic that can emerge when art and science connect deeply. REGISTRATIONYou can register for all three sessions, but you can also choose to join only one or two sessions. There is a discount if you register for all sessions.W e offer a few free diversity tickets. If you are or know anyone who is interested in attending from a under-represented community in data visualisation, or somebody who doesn't have the financial means to join the sessions, please use one of these diversity tickets. We also have the option for others to buy a diversity ticket for someone else. You buy the ticket and we make sure someone will be able to join the sessions.All registrations are final. There is no refund. You can however transfer the ticket to someone else. Please let us know at least 3 days in advance of a session, who will use the ticket.
