Bear Necessities

FREE. Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge is home to one of the largest populations of black bears in eastern North Carolina and the eastern United States. Learn more about what makes the refuge such a good home for our largest mammal. After a 30-minute presentation, you are free to explore the refuge in your vehicle to look for bears and other wildlife. Maps will be provided by your presenter. All ages welcome!
When and where:

  • Meet at the Creef Cut Wildlife Trail Parking Lot, located on Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge at Milltail Road and Hwy 64 W, approximately 6 miles west of Manns Harbor.
  • Arrive by 4:55pm to check-in and confirm your attendance.
  • Inclement weather will cancel; registered attendees will be notified the morning of if there is a weather cancellation.

The Coastal North Carolina National Wildlife Refuge Complex includes 9 National Wildlife Refuges in eastern North Carolina, including Alligator River, Pea Island, Pocosin Lakes, Mattamuskeet, Mackay Island, Currituck, Swanquarter, Cedar Island, and Roanoke River. These refuges protect and manage more than 500,000 acres of dunes, marshes, and forests, and the wildlife that rely on them for the continuing benefit of the American people.
