Together with street vendors, Beloved Community Incubator (BCI) won in April 2023 the passage of a transformative law to decriminalize vending in Washington, DC! We're celebrating food vendors who have repaired their carts and received food manager certification with support from the BCI License Fund & sharing back to the community about the fight ahead to make sure that the Department of Licensing & Consumer Protection and the Department of Health fully implement the law in a way that is fair and fully accessible for all vendors.
BCI is a solidarity economy movement organization, incubator, non-extractive lender, and worker self-directed non-profit in the Washington, DC metro region. We focus on building a regional solidarity economy that centers people, especially poor and working-class workers and people of color, over profit. The victorious campaign to decriminalize street vending is one part of our solidarity economy movement work - with a grassroots base of vendors, we decriminalized a piece of the commons and opened up paths for vendors to access the safety of a license and the opportunity to enter the formal economy.
