BASICS: Digital Design for MakerSpaces

Learn about the MakerSpace, file types, terminology, and other basic knowledge on 2D and 3D design and how to begin your making journey.

We will be learning about digital design for physical creation. Whether you plan to use our makerspace or have a machine of your own you want to learn how to design for, this class will cover the common file formats used for machines like the laser cutter/engraver, CNC router, CNC plasma cutter, vinyl cutter, and 3D printers, as well as the software used to make 2D and 3D models for these machines. We will discuss the differences between additive and subtractive manufacturing and the costs/benefits to different processes and machine types. Attendees will get the most out of the workshop if they bring a laptop or tablet they can use to follow along with the presentation, with the software Inkscape installed, however it is not required. Feel free to come up to an hour ahead of time to get staff assistance with installing software on your device if needed. This class is designed to prime you to design your own files/models, to learn about the makerspace, and may include equipment demonstration, but will not be very hands-on otherwise. If you are ready to learn but overwhelmed at trying to understand all the terminology and acronyms out there, this is your ideal starting point!--------------------------- Instructor Bio: Gene is a lifelong artist, maker, and fixer who lives by the old saying that a jack of all trades is oftentimes better than a master of one. They have been teaching in makerspaces around the south sound since 2015 including the City of Auburn Makerspace, the Tacoma Tool Library, Coyote Central, and Pierce College. He loves to teach all ages, and especially appreciates intergenerational learning spaces such as the Lacey makerspace. He has taught subjects ranging from metalwork, woodwork, and power tools, to digital design, 3d printing, laser, fiber arts, and general crafts. He lives in Tacoma with his partner, dogs, and dozens of houseplants.
