Basic Climber Class

This practical training course covers the fundamental climbing techniques, safety protocols, and operational procedures required for working at heights. Mastery of these skills is a direct requirement for advancing to the installation of towers and roof structures.

Mandatory Prerequisite Notice

You must have completed the Fall Protection and Climbing Safety class before enrolling in this course.

Exemptions: You are only exempt from this prerequisite if you meet one of the following criteria:

• Hold an active ETCP, SPRAT, or ARATA rigging certification.
• Have received a waiver approved by the Rigging Committee.

Course Content & Practical Focus

Derived directly from standard rigger work processes, this session focuses on hands-on execution and procedural safety:

• Tower Climbing Safety: Risk mitigation, environmental awareness, and structural safety specific to vertical tower climbs.
• Climbing Procedures: Step-by-step practical methods for safe ascent, transition, and maintaining 100% tie-off compliance.
• Rigger Work Process: Executing standard mechanical tasks and rigging workflows while positioned on the structure.
• Safe Ground Return: Proper techniques for completing the work process and returning safely to the ground.

Required Gear & PPE

Participants are expected to bring their own personal protective equipment and tools:

• Full-Body Harness & Climbing Helmet (Highly encouraged if you own them)
• Hard Hat & Work Gloves
• Minimum Tool Kit (Please review the requirements on ourMinimum Tool Kit Page)

PLEASE NOTE:

• The learner must have worked a call from the referral hall, worked under a collective bargaining agreement, or be a current member of IATSE Local 122.
• This is an in person class. This class has limited attendance and all attendees must have a reservation; therefore, it will be treated like a job call.

• Tardiness and/or No-Call-No-Show will be reported to the IATSE Local 122 Compliance Committee.
