Important notice:

  • Classes will take place in the East Campus Auditorium, away from all clinical areas of the hospital.
  • Attendance will be limited to 10 registrants per class (attendees may bring a plus one) that proper social distancing can take place.

If you have a fever or feel ill, please do not attend courses. For paid classes, refunds will be given to those that suspect they are COVID-19 positive or have recently been exposed to a COVID-19 positive patient prior to the course starting.

Basic Breastfeeding Class Overview

Learn the art of basic breastfeeding. Classes cover the anatomy and physiology of the breast, positioning, nutrition, and breastfeeding techniques that work. This two hour course is filled with essential information to help prepare for breastfeeding your infant. Taught by certified lactation consultant. There is no fee to attend this class, but attendees must register online beforehand.

Class discussion includes:

  • The innumerable health and nutritional benefits for baby and mom
  • The influence on breastfeeding success of your significant other, family, and visitors
  • The anatomy and physiology of breastfeeding
  • Colostrum and changes in breastmilk composition
  • Making enough milk
  • Feeding cues; awakening a sleepy baby for feeding
  • Positions; latching-on; removing the infant from your breast
  • Length and frequency of feedings; keeping a breastfeeding diary
  • How to be sure your baby is eating well
  • Managing engorgement, soreness, and other potential problems
  • Techniques for pumping and storing milk for later feedings and renting/purchasing the breast pump that's right for your situation; rental sources; bottles and nipples; pacifiers
  • Breastfeeding after a Cesarean birth; breastfeeding twins and premature babies
  • Strategies for continuing to breastfeed following return to work or school
  • Diet and medications, including birth control.

This class provides information for expectant or new parents on basic infant care and helps increase parents’ knowledge and self-confidence as they prepare for the addition of a new member to their family.

Please Note: There is room for you and one additional person to attend class.

Location: This class is located in the East Campus Auditorium (located near the corner of 5th and Adams Street). Please enter through the main entrance. You will pass the cafeteria, continue down the hallway and the auditorium will be in the double doors at the very end of the hallway.

Parking: Please do not park in the designated ER patient parking. Visitor parking is available to the South of hospital or to the East. These lots are clearly labeled with ORMC Parking signs. Do not park on private parking lots of other physician offices, proper signage is posted and they could tow your vehicle.
