Design and build your own naturally musical bamboo wind chime in this hands-on outdoor workshop surrounded by towering bamboo groves at the beautiful 20 acre Bamboo Garden in North Plains, Oregon.

Spend the day immersed in the sounds, textures, and beauty of bamboo while learning how to transform sustainably harvested bamboo into a unique hanging wind chime tuned by shape, size, and natural resonance. This class blends craft, design, and a little bit of acoustic magic.

Perfect for gardeners, artists, makers, and anyone who loves natural materials, this workshop introduces both practical bamboo crafting techniques and creative approaches to sound and composition. Participants will cut, shape, drill, lash, and assemble their own wind chime while learning about bamboo as a living plant and versatile material.

Throughout the workshop, students will learn:

• How bamboo size and shape affect tone and sound
• Safe cutting, shaping, and finishing techniques
• Traditional lashing and assembly methods
• Design approaches for balanced hanging structures

Each participant will create and take home a finished bamboo wind chime designed for the garden, porch, patio, or indoor space.

We’ll begin with a short walk through the bamboo nursery to explore different bamboo varieties and discuss harvesting, growth habits, and why bamboo has been used for centuries in both building and craft traditions around the world.

The class will then move into the covered studio workspace where materials and demonstrations will allow students to complete their projects.
