Ballybunion Backs Bill!
Overview

A fictional account of a true event that occurred during President Clinton's visit to Ireland in 1998.

Ballybunion Backs Bill! - a Play by Seanie Sugrue

A small town in the south-west of Ireland receives international recognition after President Clinton plans a trip to their iconic golf course, just a few days after his infamous scandal. An opportunistic hotelier, Roger Hasett decides it's in the town's best interest to build a statue of the president to commemorate the occasion. The wealthy and powerful businessman also goes to sinister lengths to convince Monica Looney to change the name of her small business, Monica’s Shoe Repair, out of worry that it could upset the president when he drives through the town. The unhinged cobbler’s hatred for adulterers leads to a massive fall out that sparks outrage, vandalism, and violence. Meanwhile, Monica’s children have to break the news that they are both moving abroad, a decision difficult to justify in the height of the Celtic Tiger. Ballybunion Backs Bill is a fictional account of a true event that occurred in Co Kerry in September 1998.
