Balancing Personal and Professional when Working with Youth

Tuesday, September 20th, 2022 (10:00 am - 12:00 pm EST)

Target Audience: Program staff, case managers, program directors, and supervisors working in DYCD-funded programs that provide case management services.

Description:  Have you ever had a client “friend” you on Facebook or other examples of social media? Or invite you to “hang out” outside of work, or ask for personal contact information? These are challenges you may encounter when attempting to foster a purposeful relationship that’s open and trusting, but sometimes the boundary between “personal” and “professional” can be hard to determine. A lack of clear professional boundaries can be harmful to the positive progress being made with clients within your program and organization. This workshop will focus on navigating the complexities of a range of boundary situations which can blur client-staff relations and compromise the integrity of service delivery. Emphasis will be placed on such issues as giving and receiving gifts from clients, decisions about self-disclosure, entering mutual social space via technology or in-person, and extending or accepting invitations from clients. Come learn tools to help your clients, and yourself, to establish healthy boundaries and learn how to develop strong and respectful client-staff relationships.

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain a better understanding of situations that may blur personal and professional boundaries
  • Establish a definition of a quality client-staff relationship that addresses the client’s needs while also maintaining professional boundaries
  • Learn tools and techniques to use with clients in order to ensure a professional relationship
  • Identify the limits and responsibilities of your role as a service provider and the negative effects that unclear boundaries may have on you, your clients, and your organization.
