Backyard  Slide Ranch Virtual Summer Camp

Planting Kids in Nature Since 1970The mission of Slide Ranch is to connect children to nature.  We cultivate healthy bodies and minds and foster future generations of environmental stewards. By farming, cooking, caring for animals and exploring wilderness and the coast, we teach people of all ages to see the connection between their own health, a healthy food system and a healthy environment.

Backyard Slide Ranch will be a mix of online learning, hands on projects and a one day family visit to Slide Ranch.

The camp week will include a different theme each day, highlighting specific areas of the ranch including the goats and sheep, the chickens, and garden cooking. Camp days will begin with a one-hour live online session facilitated by your child’s Slide Ranch teacher. The session will be a time for the camp groups to interact with each other, explore an area of Slide Ranch, make observations, ask questions, and share their project work from the previous day. After our morning check in, we offer guidance for two place-based projects or explorations based on the day's theme, using things you could find in the space around you OR materials that we will provide such as wool roving and seeds. One project will be explained in the online session and the second project will be introduced in a short video tutorial, as well as a written description. We will also share Slide Ranch produced short videos as another resource to learn more and delve deeper into the theme. Each camp day concludes with a half hour afternoon Zoom session (optional) to reflect on the day's theme and projects. In addition to these distance learning opportunities, as we ease out of sheltering in place, virtual camp will also include an appointed time, prior to the start of the camp week, for your family to come explore Slide Ranch with a self-guided treasure hunt and pick up project materials for the camp week. Before the start of the camp week we will email you an overview of the week’s themes and activities, day-by-day, along with all the necessary links. We recommend signing up for a single week, not multiple weeks, as the curriculum will repeat for each of the 3 weeks. Thank you!
