 If you have ever wanted to learn to paint with watercolors or you'd like to brush up on some fundamentals, this is the class for you! You'll learn about supplies and materials as well as the different kinds of brushes and how to use them. Paper options and what may be best for you will also be discussed. You'll also learn about brush techniques and how to control pigment and water through several exercises that will build your skills and give you confidence. Those skills will be used to create a beautiful piece and have fun learning the process of watercolor. 

This class is for beginners or anyone who would like to review the fundamentals of watercolors!

Supply List


A resealable palette will be needed for your tube paints.

Yellow Ochre 

Ultramarine Blue

Burnt Sienna

Raw Sienna

Neutral Tint

Ultramarine Violet

Alizarin Crimson Permanent 

Similar colors are acceptable for the project. You may bring a spray bottle or eye dropper to wet your pallet.

Pen and Pencil

Kneaded Eraser

Water containers, either two separate containers or one with two wells

Paper Towels. The instructor prefers Viva Signature however, you may use what you have. Tissues if desired.

Brushes: Round Brushes - Recommend a small size 1 to 3, a medium 6 to 8 and a large 10 to 14. Please bring a flat brush, preferably a medium to large 1/2 to 3/4 inch. Optional, bring a mop or quill brush in the 4 to 6 range. If you have other brushes please bring them.  

Arches Watercolor Cold Press 9x12 Pad, 12 sheets, is recommended. It is less expensive than buying a block. But, you can use any Cotton cold press paper will be acceptable. Please just make sure it is cotton paper. 

Paper Towels - some people prefer a sponge. 


Suggestions on where to purchase supplies: Jerry’s Artarama in Va Beach and Hurtung Gallery and Art Supplies in Portsmouth are preferred, however some supplies can be found at Michael’s and Hobby Lobby. Supplies can also be purchased online at Cheap Joe’s, Dick Blick, Amazon, and Jerry’s Artarama. There will be ample time for individual instruction and guidance throughout the workshop.
