The Capoeira Spot is a community-based nonprofit whose mission is to promote the Afro-Brazilian martial art of capoeira in the DC community. Capoeira was developed by African warriors enslaved in Brazil and used to fight for their freedom. Today, there is still an urgent need to practice the liberating arts. At The Capoeira Spot, we grow stronger together.The Capoeira Spot started in 2001 as a group of eight students, including its current leaders, Contra Mestre Morcego and Professora Borboleta. Undeterred by lack of an official space, the original eight trained together in Morgego's restaurant after hours. Over time, CapoeiraDC grew its following and moved to five different locations to support its growth. With each move, Morcego and Borboleta brought capoeira to a new neighborhood and renovated blighted locations into vibrant community spaces.Over 20 the last years in DC, The Capoeira Spot has grown to offer an array of classes. At our current spot at 2008 Rhode Island Ave NE, we offer kids classes for toddlers to teens, adult classes, Samba and Afro-Brazilian dance, and music and drumming.

It might be cold out but it&#x27;s hot at The Spot! Immerse yourself in Afro-Brazilian martial art, culture, music, and dance at Axé Fest, our community day of FREE classes featuring the Afro-Brazilian martial art of Capoeira, Yoga, and Afro-Brazilian Dance and Drumming. Classes are open to kids and adults!1﻿pm - We&#x27;ll kick off with a fun KIDS CAPOEIRA class (ages 4-12). Parents need to be present during the class.2pm - W﻿e&#x27;ll get our bodies warm with YOGA for all with <a href="https://www.instagram.com/d_yoga_dude/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">D Yoga Dude</a>3﻿pm - We&#x27;ll get into flow with INTRO TO CAPOEIRA class for teens and adults with <a href="https://www.instagram.com/thecapoeiraspot/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Mestre Morcego</a>. We&#x27;ll then put what we learned into action with a Capoeira Roda and Demo.5pm - W﻿e&#x27;ll top off the day with AFRO-BRAZILIAN DANCE to live drumming*﻿ Intro to Capoeira classes are for people new to capoeira. No experience is needed! Wear comfortable clothes.*﻿ A special New Year&#x27;s promo on our Intro to Capoeira Classes will be announced and offered to Axé Fest participants who take the Intro to Capoeira class at Axé Fest!
