Join us at AWP Seattle for an offsite reading at Cherry Street Coffee House (700 1st Avenue location) on Friday, March 10, at 7 PM, featuring poets Gabrielle Bates, Isabella DeSendi, Darrel Alejandro Holnes, Patrycja Humienik, Jason Koo, Eugenia Leigh, José Olivarez and imogen xtian smith! Free and open to the public. Doors will open for the event at 6:30 PM and readings will begin at 7. Book signing to follow.Advance online ticketing will end at 4 PM (ET) on the day of the event. After that, guests will be admitted at the door until the venue reaches capacity. Note that by attending this event, you agree to abide by our code of conduct below. Thank you for respecting our community.About the Featured Poets<a href="https://www.gabriellebat.es/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Gabrielle Bates</a> is the author of Judas Goat (Tin House, 2023). A Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry Fellowship finalist, she has published her poetry in the New Yorker, the Academy of American Poets’ Poem-a-Day, Ploughshares, APR and Best American Experimental Writing, among other journals and anthologies. Originally from Birmingham, Alabama, she currently lives in Seattle, where she helps out at Open Books: A Poem Emporium and—with Luther Hughes and Dujie Tahat—cohosts the podcast The Poet Salon. She teaches occasionally through a variety of institutions, including the Rosenbach Museum, Tin House and the University of Washington center in Rome.Isabella DeSendi is a Latina poet and educator whose work has been published in Narrative, Leveler, Small Orange and other places. Her chapbook Through the New Body won the Poetry Society of America’s Chapbook Fellowship and was published in 2020. Most recently, she received a Poets &amp; Writers BIPOC grant, and she has been named a finalist for the Frontier Digital Poetry Chapbook Award, the June Jordan Fellowship, Narrative‘s Annual Poetry Prize and Palette‘s Spotlight Award. Isabella holds an MFA from Columbia University and currently resides in New Jersey.<a href="https://www.darrelholnes.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">D﻿arrel Alejandro Holnes</a> is an Afro-Panamanian American writer. He is the author of Migrant Psalms (Northwestern University Press, 2021) and Stepmotherland (Notre Dame Press, 2022) and the recipient of the Andres Montoya Poetry Prize from Letras Latinas, the Drinking Gourd Poetry Prize and a National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellowship in Creative Writing (poetry). His poem &quot;Praise Song for My Mutilated World&quot; won the C. P. Cavafy Poetry Prize from Poetry International. He is an artist-in-residence with the Latinx Playwrights Circle, assistant professor of English at Medgar Evers College, and a faculty member at New York University. His play Starry Night was a finalist for the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center’s National Playwrights Conference and the Princess Grace Award in Playwriting. His play Bayano was also a finalist for the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center’s National Playwrights Conference. His most recent play, Black Feminist Video Game, was produced by the Civilians for 59E59, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Center Theater Group and other theaters and venues and won an inaugural Anthem Award. He is the founder of the Greater Good Commission and Festival, a festival of Latinx short plays.<a href="https://www.patrycjasara.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Patrycja Humienik</a>, daughter of Polish immigrants, is a writer, editor and teaching artist based in Seattle. Her poems are featured/forthcoming in Gulf Coast, the Adroit Journal, TriQuarterly, Ninth Letter, SAND Journal Berlin, 128 Lit, Hayden’s Ferry Review, the Slowdown podcast and elsewhere. She is working on her first book, Anchor Baby.<a href="http://www.jasonykoo.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Jason Koo</a> is a second-generation Korean American poet, educator, editor and nonprofit director. He is the author of three full-length collections of poetry: More Than Mere Light, America&#x27;s Favorite Poem and Man on Extremely Small Island, winner of the De Novo Poetry Prize and the Asian American Writers&#x27; Workshop Members&#x27; Choice Award for the best Asian American book of 2009. His work has been published in Best American Poetry 2022, the Missouri Review, Village Voice and Yale Review, among other places, and won fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, Vermont Studio Center and New York State Writers Institute. He is an associate teaching professor of English at Quinnipiac University and the founder and executive director of Brooklyn Poets.<a href="https://www.eugenialeigh.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Eugenia Leigh</a> is a Korean American poet and the author of Bianca (Four Way Books, forthcoming March 2023) and Blood, Sparrows and Sparrows (Four Way Books, 2014). Her poems and essays have appeared in numerous publications including the Nation, Ploughshares, Waxwing and the 2017 Best of the Net Anthology. The recipient of Poetry’s 2021 Bess Hokin Prize as well as fellowships and awards from Poets &amp; Writers Magazine, Kundiman and others, Eugenia received her MFA from Sarah Lawrence College and serves as a poetry editor at the Adroit Journal.<a href="https://joseolivarez.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">José Olivarez</a> is the son of Mexican immigrants. His debut book of poems, Citizen Illegal, was a finalist for the PEN/ Jean Stein Award and a winner of the 2018 Chicago Review of Books Poetry Prize. It was named a top book of 2018 by the Adroit Journal, NPR, and the New York Public Library. His new book, Promises of Gold, was published by Henry Holt in February 2023. Along with Felicia Chavez and Willie Perdomo, he coedited the poetry anthology The BreakBeat Poets Vol. 4: LatiNEXT. He is the cohost of the poetry podcast The Poetry Gods. In 2018, he was awarded the first annual Author and Artist in Justice Award from the Phillips Brooks House Association and named a Debut Poet of 2018 by Poets &amp; Writers. In 2019, he was awarded a Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry Fellowship from the Poetry Foundation. His work has been featured in the New York Times, the Paris Review and elsewhere. <a href="https://www.instagram.com/imogen.xtian/?hl=en" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">imogen xtian smith</a> is a poet and performer living in Lenapehoking / Brooklyn, NY. Their work has appeared in Baest, b l u s h, Folder, the Rumpus, the Poetry Project Newsletter and Tagvverk among other places, as well as in We Want It All: An Anthology of Radical Trans Poetics. imogen holds an MFA from NYU and was a 2021–22 Emerge–Surface–Be Fellow at the Poetry Project.
