About this event

  • 1 hour 30 minutes

Join author Travis Zimmerman and illustrator Sam Zimmerman / Zhaawanoogiizhik as they present How the Birds Got Their Songs, newly published by MNHS Press, as part of North Shore Community Night at Split Rock Lighthouse.

The two cousins collaborated to create this children’s picture book based on a family story handed down through generations and reflecting traditional knowledge from the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. Including both Ojibwemowin and English language versions, this volume encourages readers to explore the natural world and celebrates the gift of birdsong.

The author and illustrator will read the book aloud and there will be time for questions and answers with the audience. Books will be available for purchase and for signing. The author and illustrator will discuss their inspiration, source material, techniques, collaborative process, and offer insights into the significance the details they've included in their work.
