About this event

  • 2 hours

Join us for a talk and conversation with journalist and media entrepreneur Alicia Stewart, a 2024 Visiting fellow at Brown SPH’s Information Futures Lab. Stewart – who is a co-creator of an award-winning Chat GPT plugin that leverages journalistic norms to address generative AI concerns – unearthed crucial questions during her fellowship: What is the currently available data telling us about who is considered an expert, and who isn’t? What are these determinations based on? In her talk, she will interrogate algorithms of expertise, explain why there is a need to disrupt ideas of intelligence and expertise, and showcase how we can reimagine who is smart and seen in society.

Alicia Stewart is a speaker and media consultant who shares true stories of the underestimated using new tech with old-fashioned values. With a career spanning from “accidental” TV hosting in high school to roles in women's networks in Chicago and New York, she's been a part of groundbreaking teams at NBC, PBS, and CNN. Honored with a Harvard Nieman fellowship, a Peabody Award, and more, Alicia's latest project, Source Scout, won the Knight Lab Grand Prize for its AI-driven approach to aiding journalists. She is currently an Information Futures Lab Visiting Fellow at Brown University’s School of Public Health.
