Austin Rowing Club National Learn to Row Day 2025

Welcome to Austin Rowing Club's National Learn to Row Day 2025!

It’s never too early (or too late) to try something new! Grab an oar and hit the water! Join us for a free National Learn to Row Day event at our Waller Creek Boathouse on Sunday, May 18, 2025 between 8 am and noon.

We are offering 1 hour sessions starting at 8am. Please select the ticket below that matches the time you want to attend. You can order up to 4 tickets. Space is limited to 18 participants per session.

Your 1 hour session will include a tour of the boathouse and information on the boats, oars, and basic commands used in the sport. We will take you out on training boats so you can get the feel for rowing in a more stable platform.

Afterwards, we will be available to answer questions about the full Learn to Row course, Juniors Program, Summer Camps and how to join the Austin Rowing Club.

Please plan to show up 15 minutes before your session start time to allow time to check in and make sure we have your waiver.

Each rower will need to complete a waiver ahead of time.

Frequently asked questions

What should I wear?

Tighter-fitting, weather-appropriate, athletic gear with closed-toes shoes should be worn. Make sure to bring a water bottle. Additional sun gear (sunglasses, hats, sunscreen, etc) is highly recommended!

Where can I park?

Unfortunately, there is no parking at the Waller Creek Boathouse. On Sunday, Austin city street parking is free, however, it may be limited. There are parking lots or parking garages near by (paid) if there is no street parking. Please plan your arrival time accordingly.

Can my family/children participate?

We welcome families however, we ask that children be at least 12 years old and accompanied by a parent. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate younger children. Please fill out a waiver for both the adults and any minors ahead of time.

Will I be in a real rowing shell?

No, we have training barges for this event. These are much more stable and will give you an initial introduction into rowing without having to worry about being in a "tippy" boat. If you enjoy this session, we have Learn to Row sessions where you can learn in an actual rowing shell.

Is this event happening rain or shine?

We will cancel the event if there is heavy rain, high winds or lightning. Otherwise, this is a water sport so a drizzle won't stop us! If there is a cancellation, we will email you to let you know.

What can I bring on the barge?

There is not a lot of extra room or storage on the barge, so please limit what you are bringing to your water bottle and perhaps a very small bag. We are not responsible for anything lost in the lake. If needed, we can hold some items on shore for you while you are out in the barge.
