Calling Austin Data Scientists!
Listen, learn, collaborate and grow alongside other leaders in Austin data science.
This year we welcome to you to the first Data Science Colloquium! Hosted by Galvanize, the Colloquium was created to tighten and strengthen a community of thought leaders and industry experts in data science so they can learn, grow and network with each other.
The Austin Data Science Colloquium is a speaker-based event series for intermediate and senior Data Scientists, created with the intent to build a tighter community of leading industry experts. Each event will feature a different speaker who will give a 30-min talk on a current project they are working on, including some of the problems they face and how their team is solving it.

Meet the Presenter
Jonathan Ortiz is a data scientist and knowledge engineer at Austin data start-up data.world. This summer through a DataStart grant fellowship, Jonathan worked with the US Census Bureau to make Census data more accessible and easier to combine with other data sets via data.world. Jonathan believes the census has much untapped potential and hopes his work galvanizes others to unlock innovative solutions to issues facing our country for years to come.
Jonathan is one of six recipients of the 2016 DataStart grant fellowship managed by RENCI and the South Big Data Hub and supported by the National Science Foundation. Jonathan is a former student at the UT Data Analytics and Big Data Program. Prior to his work in data science, Jonathan accumulated extensive experience in media, marketing, and consulting. Most recently, Jonathan served as Director at Scratch, a division of Viacom that drives innovation by channeling the power of brands like MTV, BET, Comedy Central, and Nickelodeon. Jonathan received a Bachelor of Science in Economics with concentrations in Marketing and Management from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
Austin data start-up data.world recently launched its data sharing and collaboration platform and is currently in preview release mode. This summer, data.world partnered with the US Census Bureau to ingest the American Community Survey in a Linked Data format to help data users enrich analyses that require US demographic information. An important goal for this joint effort is to empower more data users to use this fundamental source of information and contribute to its development.
The Presentation Will Cover:
* Overview of the ACS data currently available on data.world
* Demo of the platform and data query tool
* Tutorial on how to upload your own data and link to other datasets
* How to contribute to and benefit from the network effect at the crossroads of Open Data and Linked Data
* Where these powerful technologies are likely to take us next
