Chosen for Life Ministries

Jenny Brown will be teaching our August Learning to Care Workshop on "Communication Development."
Jenny Brown and her husband, Caleb, are foster parents and became involved with Chosen for Life Ministries through the Foster Care Initiative. Professionally, Jenny is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Special Education at the University of Georgia. Her research and teaching focuses on child language intervention, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and family and teacher collaboration for children with and at-risk for disabilities. Before earning her PhD from Florida State University, she provided communication intervention services to young children and their families as a certified speech-language pathologist. 
Communication is essential to the human experience. We share information, express needs, gain information, and build relationships through communication. But how do we really learn to talk in the first place? And, how can we support children in our family, in our care, and in our circles of interaction to develop these skills? In this session, we will explore typical, delayed, and atypical language and speech development in children. Information, discussion, and resources will be provided related to: typical language and speech progression, the impact of trauma on communication development, language development in children who are adopted  internationally, and ways to support communication development from infancy through adolescence. This session is appropriate for parents and caregivers of biological children, children in foster care, and children who are adopted domestically or internationally as well as anyone interested in learning about communication development in children. 
 
Adoptive and foster parents are invited to come to this 2 hour workshop, earn CE credits, and enjoy free childcare.
Please note that only 50 seats are available and only the first 50 children to register will able to stay for childcare. If you register for childcare, you MUST complete the follow up childcare registration form that will be emailed to you immediately after registering for this event.
