Assertive Communication (Registration Fee $75.00)

The Rhode Island Higher Education Training Consortium (the ‘Consortium’) is dedicated to providing the higher education workforce with the training they need to succeed, while affording opportunities to network with colleagues from other area institutions.  The Consortium offers comprehensive programs designed to address mutual needs within the member institutions while providing economies of scale and cost-sharing opportunities.

Do you have difficulty saying no?  Do you struggle to have your knowledge and ideas heard by others? Many people associate assertiveness with being "pushy" or feel that they would like to be more assertive but don't have the personality to communicate assertively in a professional setting. Assertive communication is a learned skill that will allow you to project self-confidence, demonstrate your capability and have a more positive influence in the workplace. This workshop explores what it really means to be assertive, and how to best communicate your needs to others.
In this three hour session, participants will:

<LI>Explore the differences between assertive, aggressive and passive behaviors.</LI>
<LI>Understand personal barriers to communicating assertively.</LI>
<LI>Recognize the non-verbal behaviors that can undermine assertive communication.</LI>
<LI>Utilize techniques to create assertive statements in a wide variety of situations.</LI>

 Presenter:
Pam Heffernan has brought leadership, management, technical and sales experience to the companies she has worked with over the past 30 years. She developed her leadership skills by tackling challenging tasks throughout her 14-year career with IBM Corporation. In 1991 Pam was recruited by a software firm in RI and served as their Vice President of Product and Customer Services. In this role, Pam had responsibility for product quality, sales support, education and training, distribution and customer satisfaction.
 Pam and her partner, Mary Alice Callahan, formed Performance Management Associates in 1993. Their mission is to provide top quality, innovative and customized training and consulting solutions for their clients. Pam was also affiliated with Bryant College’s Executive Development Center as an adjunct faculty member in the Center, focusing on programs dealing with leadership, communications, and employee development.

Program Fee:
 A fee of $75.00 per participant will be billed to each institution, which includes parking and continental breakfast.

What are my parking options?
Parking will be provided on campus. We ask that participants follow specific parking instructions which will be emailed to all registered participants before the event. If you would like information on accessible parking spots, please contact us at rihetc@gmail.com 
How do I pay for this event?
RIHETC will bill your institution directly for the workshop fee. Contact your Human Resources Office with questions regarding your institution's policy on professional development.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
No, that is not necessary.
What is the refund policy?
If you find you can no longer attend, we always suggest that you first try to find someone else from your institution who can attend in your place. We are able to issue refunds for cancellations made prior to 15 days from the event date. Cancellations made less than 15 days from the event date cannot be refunded and your institution will be charged for your ticket whether you attend or not. You may transfer your ticket to someone else at your institution at any time, however. Contact your Human Resources Office with institution specific questions.
