Fascia and Somatic: Mapping the Interconnectedness of the Body in the Ashtanga Yoga Practice

This workshop offers a unique map of the 'anatomy of connection,' which focuses on whole-body fascial and myofascial linkages rather than individual muscles and bones within the practice of the Ashtanga Method. Learn how muscles are joined into functional complexes within fascial planes – resulting in integrated whole-body patterning in posture and function.

This workshop offers an opportunity to develop your body reading skills and learn how the yoga postures of the Ashtanga Method are affected by the different fascial meridian lines.

The workshop offers a new perspective - understanding the 'Superficial Back Line,' for example, gives insights into hamstring problems that one cannot get from considering hamstrings alone. Similarly, the 'Spiral Line' shows how to resolve rotational compensations in a way that no analysis of any single muscle can give.

Whatever your movement modality – yoga, yoga therapy, or Ashtanga Yoga this course offers skills to see the roots of movement limitations and structural compensations more effectively in your own yoga practice or that of clients and yoga students.

What You Will Learn

How to move beyond a mechanical "cause and effect" understanding of muscles to a deeper insight into the integrated connections of functional movement and yoga practice.

A completely new view of myofascial anatomy and new ways to understand postural and movement patterns in yoga postures.

The key functional movement patterns of Anatomy Trains that every yoga practitioner should be aware of.

How imbalances in these key anatomic patterns can impact your yoga asana practice.

Liberating the spine through awareness of the psoas, diaphragm and core fascial sheathing

Awaken a different core inside yourself with this dynamic collaboration between the psoas, diaphragm and connecting fascial sheathing.

From a very different perspective – concentrate your attention on your inner core – the 'cobra' of the vital (juicy) psoas-diaphragm complex. After years of 'core stabilization' for the transversus abdominis and pelvic floor, come further inside to the fluid dance of the psoas and diaphragm through the spine and hips, allowing the outer core to 'unstabilize' to reach the inner centrality of being. Through the fascia's deep front line and inner core lines, there is a connection from your feet to your pelvic floor and deep core muscles.

Santina offers an approach of body sensing and movement to reach the psoas-diaphragm balance with a gentle but powerful touch to awaken and align these inner structures. In this dialogue, we will empower the spinal engine, energize the kidneys, and spend time deeply exploring the two most emotional muscles in the body through the fascia. Get more working awareness in the place where your moving self and your organic self meet – the front of the spine.

This shift in perspective offers practitioners and teachers of yoga, an empowering model for self-healing and the key to increasing strength, gaining flexibility, preventing injury, and improving resiliency. Describing the practice of moving from one's core, highlights the importance of engaging the psoas muscle—located on either side of the spine—to integrate the body, mind, emotion, and spirit. We discuss the pelvis as the foundation of our physical core and the vital connection.

This workshop will combine guided movement self-exploration with gentle bodywork, backbends, forward bending and twisting. This knowledge and inner knowing of the body will awaken Ashtanga or hatha yoga practice to a new sacred dimension. The context of dialogue between two contrasting approaches that lead to the same summit: core aliveness, a being that matches your doing, a dynamic hara, and the skills to elicit the same awareness in others – with your hands, words, and touch cuing.
