Why provide free yoga to the community? We offer this opportunity with an intentional focus on those who have never been exposed to the system of traditional yogic practices. We do this to share with you the transformational benefits yogic practices have been shown to have on your physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing.
What are traditional yogic practices? Traditional yogic practices are not about what your body can do, rather deepening your relationship with yourself with a system of tools, resources, and support. The word “yoga” means union in Sanskrit, and is a way to unify your relationship with your higher self and the larger Divine forces which created you. The term "traditional" simply refers to the original teachings by Maharishi Patanjali (350BC) of Ashtanga Yoga, or eight limbed yoga. Until about 50 years ago, there were no other teachings for Yoga as anything not following the Ashtanga practice was considered sport and not Yoga.
What are the benefits I might get from doing yoga? The ultimate purpose of Yoga is samadhi, which roughly translates to integration or balance between body, mind, and intellect or spirit. With this goal in mind, at Aset which teach Yoga to:
- Cultivate healthy emotional and stress responses (Yamas and Niyamas)
- Build physical strength and flexibility through holding specific postures (Asanas)
- Develop tools to help calm and focus your mind (Pranayama or Yogic breath)
- Establish a meditation practice to build and reinforce your progress
What do I need to be able to participate? An open mind is all you need to bring! If you have a yoga mat, blocks, and straps feel free to bring them--if you don't have these supplies we will have some available for use in the studio. All participants will be required to sign a liability waiver prior to their first class.
