Artists + Archives Roundtable

Sixty Inches From Center is an online arts publication and archiving initiative that supports art and writing in and about Chicago, and as it resonates around the world. We prioritize the archiving of andwriting by, about, and for communities ofcolor, women, LGBTQIA,across disabilities, and the long list of voices neglected in mainstream conversations about art and culture.

Archives aren’t only a place for academic and scholarly research. They can also be sources of inspiration for artists. When given direct and generous access to a repository’s holdings, artists have found new ways to re-contextualize, interpret, and breathe new life into historic materials while also expanding awareness of and audience for those materials. This panel discussion will give the floor to visual artists, curators, writers, and arts educators who are using archives as a launching point for their research-based and archive-centered practices. This conversation is for both artists and collection managers. Taking into consideration the experience of both sides, this panel will show successful examples of how artists and archivists, librarians, and other collection caretakers have worked together to develop new artworks, exhibitions, and projects.
