Friends of the Lismore Regional Gallery (Friends) are very excited to present an Artist Talk with Dr Marian Tubbs conducted by Birrugan.

This event is part of the Friends program ‘Beyond Bricks and Mortar’ which has funding support from The Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR).

Marian Tubbs is an artist who lives and works on Bundjalung / Lismore. In 2024 she will be exhibiting in Art Byron across multiple venues. Her recent exhibitions include (2024) new images, STATION Gallery Sydney, Backwash, ANU Drill Hall Gallery, Canberra (2023) and Know my Name: Australian Female Artists 1900-Now, National Gallery of Australia, ACT (2022). A major early-career survey of Tubbs’ practice, we need privacy guys here too, was held at the USC Art Gallery in 2020, accompanied by a significant publication. In 2019 Tubbs was selected for the Artspace Studio, 12-month studio residency at Artspace, Sydney and in 2017, Tubbs was the recipient of the Marten Bequest Scholarship for sculpture.

Tubbs' work is held in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, Museum of Contemporary Art, Australian National University and international institutions. Tubbs holds a PhD from UNSW Art & Design and is course coordinator and senior lecturer in Art and Design at Southern Cross University.

Marian Tubbs’ assemblage-focused practice explores her broad research interests in digital and vision technologies, materiality, language and ecology. Tubbs conflates material juxtapositions between body and object, high and low culture, analogue and digital, physical and virtual, natural and artificial, to transform the everyday into a space of interrogation.

Marian Tubbs will be talking to Birrugan.

Birrugan is a Goori from the North Coast, who currently works across Gumbaynggirr country. He is currently a Language Teacher at the Historic Gumbaynggirr Freedom School and also works at Muurrbay Aboriginal Language and Culture Co-Op. Birrugan’s concern for the lack of language and cultural transmission is driving his work in developing and adapting frameworks for future generations. He is involved in writing and the translation of numerous stories, songs and intellectual concepts into Gumbaynggirr.

Artist Talk with Marian Tubbs will be at Elevator ARI (3 Rural Street, Lismore) on Saturday 1 June 24 at 3PM
