Overview

Spend an evening with calligraphy master Arman Karimi: crafting beautiful, unique gifts & enjoying Afghan desserts & tea. Beginner Friendly!

This workshop is for anyone (even total beginners!) looking to craft a beautiful and unique gift for a loved one or a decoration for the home, learn the history of this art form, and enjoy a warm and cozy evening creating art & enjoying Afghan desserts & tea together.

Hosted by the International Rescue Committee WA, this Arabic calligraphy night is the first in the Art Without Borders series, which showcases the beauty and diversity of our region's refugee community.

Arman Karimi, a former IRC client, is originally from Kabul, Afghanistan. He creates his calligraphy with the traditional wooden pens for Islamic calligraphy. Arabic calligraphy has a 2000-year old history that is as rich and complex as "qahwa" قهوة (Arabic coffee).

The cost of the ticket includes: Instruction with Arman and everything you need to create a beautiful piece of art: gilded paper and calligraphy ink, mounting Ebru paper, and traditional bamboo calligraphy pens. Afghan desserts and tea provided.

Proceeds from this event go towards paying our artist and covering supplies and to help raise funds for our Welcome Home campaign, serving newly arrived refugees and asylum seekers in the Seattle area.

If you are unable to attend but would like to support, please consider a donation to our refugee resettlement efforts in Puget Sound (https://bit.ly/IRCSeattledonate).

Thank you to our sponsor, Community Health Plan of Washington, and to TASWIRA for their generously discounted use of the space.
