Art Papi Book Presentation

Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center (SRBCC) is a community-based nonprofit organization serving the neighborhood of Hermosa located in Chicago’s northwest side. SRBCC is the longest-standing Puerto Rican cultural center in the city. Established in 1971, it was named in honor of Segundo Ruiz Belvis, the Puerto Rican founder of a secret abolitionist society that freed  children who had been enslaved during Spanish colonial rule. In that spirit, SRBCC realizes its mission to preserve and promote appreciation of the culture and arts of Puerto Rico and Latin America, with a focus on its African heritage.SRBCC evolved from a community arts project developed by Association House of Chicago and community activists of the Latin American Defense Organization (LADO). These organizations supported the economic and democratic rights of the Puerto Rican and Latino community of Chicago, focusing on the areas of civic involvement, citizenship, cultural identity, public education, health, safety and security, housing, and economic opportunity.

Art Papi, a 216-page bilingual book about Puerto Rico's contemporary history and subculture through an artistic lens.

Art Papi is an archival account of the creative flourishing that occurred on the island after Hurricane Maria and a questioning of our political and cultural landscape. The book provides insight into the voices of creatives who challenged this emerging nexus while sharing with readers the strength of their vulnerabilities as artists.Art Papi is a collaborative project of more than 60 artists. It's a book about a journey through Puerto Rico through the voices and stories, including Nydia Caro, Ana Teresa Toro, Bryan Villarini, and chefs Natalia Vallejo and Jose Enrique. It also includes original collaborations with photographers, painters, illustrators, movers and shakers, and musicians.Art Papi was created by Miguel Figueroa. Figueroa began his career as a journalist in 2007 writing concert reviews for The San Juan Star. In 2008, he became Vice Spain's first fashion editor, and from 2009 to 2012, he was a senior editor for Luis Venegas. He has contributed as a writer and/or editor to El País, Vanity Fair Spain, Interview, V Magazine, Pin-Up, Hercules Universal, Apartamento, and USA Today.Among the people he has interviewed include Carolina Herrera, mother and daughter, Giselle Bündchen, Ricardo Bofill, Bosco Sodi, Villano Antillano, Gloria Trevi, iLe, Rossy de Palma, Rita Ora, Buscabulla, Patricia Field and Jackie Collins. Upon returning to Puerto Rico in 2015, he began to notice new movements and conversations emerging. “The island called me back. Puerto Rico was changing rapidly, and I couldn't stay in New York receiving social media updates. I had to be here.” The following year, he began interviewing artists for the project. What emerged is a showcase of his vision of Puerto Rico: one that is stimulating, fun, fresh, global, and provocative. Miguel holds a BBA in Marketing and Art History from the University of Puerto Rico, an MA in Contemporary Art Theory from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, ​​and postgraduate studies in Art Direction and Photography from the Elisava School of Design in Barcelona. He has also participated in curatorial projects in San Juan at Recinto Cerra, El Kilómetro, Instituto de Subcultura and the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico.
