About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour 30 minutes

Join us for Tango 101: a fun, challenging introduction to Argentine tango. We are so happy to be hosting Felipe Martinez and Ayano Yoneda to teach this series, which they have taught for many years in San Francisco and at Stanford. Tango is an improvisational dance based on connection and communication. Felipe and Ayano teach the fundamental structures that give rise to grace, fluidity, and creativity in social dancing. No partner necessary; no experience necessary.

These classes are taught using the terms "leaders" and "followers," and are inclusive to queer, trans, and non-binary people.

The Berkeley City Club is a historic landmark designed by architect Julia Morgan. You are welcome to enjoy a cocktail at Morgan's Bar and Lounge, located right across the hall from the ballroom. Members of the Berkeley City Club receive a discount on tango classes.

We are a 10-minute walk from Downtown Berkeley BART. For bike parking, use the bell to enter through the service entrance, and go straight to get to the back courtyard. No parking in the City Club lot. Street parking is free after 6:00 pm.

La Bruja Tango holds tango classes every Wednesday (with few exceptions). If you have been dancing tango regularly for about six months, check out Felipe and Ayano's intermediate series, scheduled right after Tango 101 at 8:30 pm on the same dates. Felipe and Ayano will also be teaching at La Bruja on Wednesdays in July. We hope you will all continue with us then! Event organized by Lindsey Newbold.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to wear dance shoes?

No, but helps to have some kind of dance shoes. We recommend flexible shoes that have leather soles or some kind of slippery soles. Jazz shoes, character shoes, ballroom shoes, and dance sneakers are all great. Socks work too. Avoid wearing high-heeled shoes that are not dance shoes.

Do I need to come with a dance partner?

No. Most people switch partners throughout the class. After you dance with someone for one song, the teachers usually ask people to switch partners. If you do come with someone and would like to stick together, you can. However, you might learn more if you dance with multiple people.
