About this event

The out-of-this-world, family-friendly Area 51 Encounter is designed to pique the curiosities of visitors of all ages regarding UFOs and aliens.

The experience will feature multiple galleries showcasing:

  • The recreation of Area 51
  • UFO sightings
  • The military's role in modern sightings
  • Galactic travel
  • A simulation of an alien abduction (based on thousands of first-hand and eye-witness accounts)
  • Life on an alien spacecraft
  • Pop culture's fascination with extraterrestrial life


You may arrive at any time during exhibit hours on the date of your ticket. Current exhibit hours are:

Sunday-Thursday: 11am-7pm

Friday-Saturday: 10am-8pm

Can I use public transit to get there?

The best way to get from Chicago to John Hancock Center without a car is th line 147 bus which takes 16 min and costs $3. The line 147 bus from State & Madison to Michigan & Chestnut takes 14 min including transfers and departs every five minutes.

Is there parking onsite?

The building’s automated parking garage, on floors 6-12, is open to the public. Enter through the designated ramp on Delaware Place or the one on Chestnut Street. The garage is enclosed, heated, and has 710 parking spaces. Monthly, daily, and weekday early special rates are available. Park here 24 h

Are there accessible parking spaces?

Yes.

Are there loud sounds and lighting effects?

There are loud noises, but nothing traumatic. One gallery includes strobe lights and warning signs are posted.

Do we have audio guides available? Audio guide languages?

Yes, an audio guide is supplied with the exhibit in English and Spanish

Is it cold inside the experience? It is outdoors?

The exhibit is held indoors in climate control.

Are restrooms available inside the exhibition?

Yes, the bottom floor hosts all gender bathrooms.

Are there clothes/coat checks available?

Yes, a coat check is available at the box office

How long does it take to see the entire exhibition?

The exhibit typically takes 1 hour, however, the content can span over 2-3 hours depending on how much is read.

What time should I arrive?

Anytime is available for admission, however, the last ticket sold is one hour prior to close.

Can I take photos/video inside the experience?

Photos and photo sharing is encouraged. Video is not allowed.

Is my child the right age to attend?

While the exhibit has no adult specific content, the topic is science fiction and the subject matter might be better suited for children 7 and up. However; the art, graphics, sculptures and replicas can be enjoyed by all.

Who will enjoy this exhibit?

Science fanatics, young adults, teenagers and any that enjoy the topic will have their fill of entertainment.
