Satire is no joke – and its potential to advance media development objectives, even in restrictive environments, make it worth tuning into.

In a new CIMA report, co-authors Dillon Case and Kevin Bleyer analyze the risks and impacts of satire through an exploration of eight satire news and current affairs programs airing in a variety of political contexts around the globe. Their analysis demonstrates its broad appeal as audiences tune in for programming that promotes free expression, fosters accountability, counters disinformation, and strengthens media literacy. What’s more, its ability to attract new audiences, especially youth, point to its potential to support more sustainable business models for media organizations.

On Tuesday, September 22, CIMA will host an engaging online discussion with several satirists profiled in the report, the report authors, and other experts in the field. What can we learn from satire’s ability to draw in new audiences and promote alternative voices and viewpoints? How do satirists manage risks in politically and financially challenging environments? And how can media development actors best leverage satire as a tool to support their objectives?
