John Martin (@SQLDiplomat) is a SQL Server professional with over a decade of experience working with the SQL Server software stack, ranging from SME to large scale Enterprise and central government implementations. Currently working as a Sales Engineer for SQL Sentry, helping customers understand how to improve the performance and reliability of their SQL Server systems.Prior to working for SQL Sentry, John worked as a Premier Field Engineer (PFE) for Microsoft in the UK. Supporting, troubleshooting, and educating some of the largest UK, European, and Global customers on the best way to use SQL Server to meet their needs. Additionally working with SME businesses to health check and tune their systems to get the most out of them.John is a regular speaker at SQL Saturday and user group events in the UK, Europe and USA, along with speaking at PASS Summit and SQL Bits in the UK. Having worked as a DBA, Developer and Business Intelligence Developer, John has gained a wealth of experience on how to, and how not to, use SQL Server to deliver a solution.

SQL Saturday South Island, NZ is pleased to announce that pre-con training will be held on Friday 15th April 2016, which is a day before SQL Saturday #479 which will again be held at CPIT on Madras Street.
For the first time the Christchurch SQL Server User Group will be flying in an international speaker / educator especially for the pre con session - Architecting & Building SQL Server Solutions.

The module breakdown for this event is as follows
Module 1 – Requirements Gathering Looking at how we will identify the key elements that go into discovering what the system we build has to achieve and translating what we have been asked into deliverable tasks.

· Identifying key information
· Converting business requirements to Technical specifications
 Module 2 – Looking at the solution Once the requirements have been gathered, then we can look at the overall solution and where SQL Server and the Data Platform fit into this. What are the connectivity requirements, along with how different technologies in other areas of the solution will have an impact on how we design the Data Platform components. · High Level Infrastructure design.
· Understanding the System, from Top to Bottom.
· Common design patterns.
· Mapping SQL Server features to design components.
 Module 3 – Build, Configuration and Testing Now that the high level design has been completed, we look at the detail of the Data Platform & SQL Server solution. Which configuration options do we turn on and off and how these impact the behavior and performance of SQL Server, starting with a base configuration we will look at how to tailor it for your specific requirements. Testing and validating the configuration options at each stage, understanding how we can automate them to save time and effort so that you understand the settings and when to use them in your solution design. · Base SQL Server build and Configuration options (cloud & on-premises).
· OLTP Vs Data Warehouse configuration specifics.
· Testing & validation techniques.
· Security configurations & considerations. 
Once completing these three modules, you will have not only the knowledge, understanding, and skills to design and build better SQL Server solutions. But also an array of template documents, scripts and useful selection of tools to help you along the way.
