Event Details

Archaeology Academy: Heritage Monitoring Scouts - Come learn about the new Heritage Monitoring Scouts (HMS) program and the prehistoric people who made Weedon Island home. After the presentations, register to hike to an archaeology site or take a canoe to visit a number of different sites around Weedon Island. Fee for each activity is $10.00 per participant and registration is required.

10:00 AM – 11:00 AM – Presentations

11:15 AM – 1:00 PM – Site tours


Please choose only one of the following activities. These activities will occur at the same time:

Site Hike – Hike with an archaeologist to part of the Weeden Island archaeology site to see an excavation and learn all about the site and the people that lived there long ago.


Canoe Tours – Heritage Monitoring Scout program - Maneuver canoes to archaeological sites around Weedon Island. You will get the chance to get off the water and monitor conditions of actual archaeology sites.


Recommended for all ages.


* Limited number of canoes provided – 10 2-person canoes (20 spots). Canoe availability on a first come, first serve basis. Includes paddles and PFDs.

 *If you are bringing your own kayak or canoe, you must provide your own paddles and PFD. 

For hikes, be sure to bring water, sunscreen and a snack. A hat and closed-toe shoes are also recommended.

For canoe participants, no experience necessary.  Each participant will sign a Pinellas County Canoe waiver. Any participants under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult with a ratio of 1 adult: 1 youth. Participants must wear a closed-toe wading shoe (old tennis shoes, keens, scuba booties).  Sun protection (hat, sunglasses, cover up) is recommended. All participants must abide by the safety policies and recommendations of Pinellas County Staff.

Reservation policy

Before continuing, we would like to make you aware of our reservation policies. Cancellations - If your class is canceled for any reason you will be notified no less than 24 hours prior to class start. We will provide a full refund for cancellations made by Pinellas County Extension. Refunds may take up to 30 days to process. Payment - We require full payment at time of reservation so be prepared with a credit card to complete this transaction. Refunds - Refunds will be made in the event of a class cancellation or if the registrant requests a refund 24 hours prior to the class time. Reservations - You must be 18 to make a reservation. If you are under 18 and want to attend a class you must register and attend with a parent or guardian.

UF/IFAS Extension Pinellas County at Weedon Island Preserve Cultural and Natural History Center offers a variety of educational and interpretive programs for the public. Center programs interpret the natural, cultural and archaeological history of the Preserve to demonstrate how the environment and people support and shape each other.


 CENTER HOURS: Thursday-Saturday 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

NEW! Sunday 11:00 a.m - 4:00 p.m.
