Applied Design Thinking for the Elementary School Classroom

With a commitment to serving a public purpose, the Professional Development Center (PDC) at Hanahau‘oli is a bridge between the school and the community. The PDC was established to build our collective capacity for developing and maintaining school communities that both meet the needs of our current society and strive to create a better future society for our children. To carry out this mission, the PDC offers a wide range of educative experiences--aligned to the school’s progressive philosophy and tradition--for educators, researchers, scholars, parents, and community members. In partnership with the University of Hawai‘i, Manoa College of Education and other community collaborators, the PDC also facilitates Hanahau‘oli School’s role as a preeminent Professional Development School (PDS) that models socially just, progressive, interdisciplinary, and inquiry approaches to teaching and learning.

Applied Design Thinking for the Elementary ClassroomDates: July 18, 19, and 20, 2022Time: 8:30am to 12:30pm HSTVenue: Hanahau&#x27;oli School Professional Development Center Cost: $300 per personDesign Thinking is a way to solve problems through creativity. “It is the confidence that everyone can be part of creating a more desirable future, and a process to take action when faced with a difficult challenge” (IDEO, 2022). It is a mindset and approach to learning, collaboration, and problem solving that can be introduced to students in early childhood and re-experienced throughout their K-12 education in multiple settings. In this workshop, teachers will gain knowledge and understanding of the Design Thinking Process and how it provides a framework for the integration of core subject curricula with a societal context and the use of an ethnographic method. With a focus on elementary education, this workshop will help teachers develop strategies to use Design Thinking methodology to transform and enrich the student learning environment from traditional models to student-centered models of instruction. Participants will learn how to embed formative assessment practices into integrated lessons using the Design Thinking process. This will include seeing how Design Thinking can be integrated with Common Core State Standards (CCSS), Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), science-technology-engineering-mathematics (STEM), and Art to create lessons and units of study. The workshop will be facilitated by leaders from <a href="https://designthinkinghawaii.wordpress.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Design Thinking Hawaii</a>.OBJECTIVES: Participants will:<ul><li>Develop knowledge of the Design Thinking Process and how it provides a framework for the integration of core curricula with a societal context and the use of an ethnographic method;</li><li> Develop strategies to use Design Thinking methodology to transform and enrich the student learning environment from traditional models to student-centered models of instruction;</li><li> Embed formative assessment practices into integrated lessons using the Design Thinking process;</li><li> Apply Design Thinking methodology to lessons that can be implemented in their local classroom context.</li><li>Utilize their Growth Mindset </li></ul>PARTICIPANTS: Teachers of all grade levels are invited but the focus will be for elementary school levels. Keith has taught five Hawaii State Department of Education PDE3 credit courses and twelve non-PDE3 credit courses. He has a doctor of business administration, master of business administration, and bachelor of science in engineering. Ian has a bachelor of science in business, has taught numerous design thinking sessions including various Design Thinking for Executives sessions.Design Thinking Hawaii is a Hawaii-based, 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization chartered to provide workshops and workforce development using the design thinking process. Design Thinking Hawaii has delivered eleven years of summer boot camps and introductory workshops, which have included numerous Hawaii Department of Education school participants. These workshops have led to the utilization of design thinking in schools throughout Hawaii.
