Have you been considering a career in Data Science? Or simply wondered what being a Data Scientist is all about? Maybe you're a Data Analyst and want to make the jump into becoming a Data Scientist?
 
Royal Mail is proud to announce that they are hosting a series of free practical, hands-on workshops led by their award-winning Data Science team with the aim of getting more people to consider Data Science as a career.
 
This second workshop in the series will focus on a common problem in Data Science in making predictions from labelled data, otherwise known as Supervised Learning.
Dr Glenn Amundsen, Senior Data Scientist at Royal Mail will take you through the basics of Machine Learning and introduce you to a few algorithms, focusing on Random Forests. By the end of this workshop you will have an understanding of the theory behind this algorithm and will have applied it to a real-world dataset. Glenn will walk you through how to prepare the data, train the model, evaluate it’s performance, and finally, discuss some of the parameters you can tune to improve your results.
 
This workshop series aims to get more people to consider a Data Science as a career to widen the talent pool available. Data Science also has one of the worst female to male ratios of all STEM-related careers, as well as falling well behind in attracting minority groups into the profession. Diversity should be essential to any modern business as it is shown to widen perspectives, drive innovation and improve employee performance.
Therefore, we are actively encouraging anyone from an underrepresented group to get involved with this workshop, even if you have little or no experience in Data Science.
 
The only requirement for attending this workshop is that you will need to bring your own laptop. A basic understanding of programming, in particular with Python, is desirable but not essential.

- 19:00 - Introduction to Supervised Machine Learning
- 19:30 - Applying Supervised Machine Learning
- 20:15 - Hands-on Exercise - (Optional)
- 20:30 - Networking + Pizza
