The topic will be record expungement. Helping individuals get their record erased. Expunging someone’s record is a crucial step in helping them move forward, rebuild their life, and work toward success. A record can create significant barriers to employment, housing, education, and even financial opportunities. By having their record expunged, individuals can access better job opportunities, secure stable housing, and fully participate in society without the stigma of their past holding them back.Ophelia Burnett, a NH resident, is a Healing Justice Program associate with the American Friends Service Committee. Her passion lies in social justice and advocating for the rights of currently and formerly incarcerated individuals. Since beginning this work in 2022, she has made a positive impact in the lives of those who have faced the challenges of incarceration. Ophelia advocates for equality, justice, and the rights of marginalized communities. With a deep belief in the inherent value and dignity of every individual, she sees this work as an opportunity to prepare herself for a career in legal advocacy and community organizing.By collaborating with organizations, activists, elected officials, and community leaders, she has been able to amplify the voices of marginalized individuals and effect positive change. She is committed to continuing this important work and invites others to join her in building a more just and inclusive world.Through Ophelia’s work in social justice, she sees this event as a great opportunity for the community. Since 603 Legal Aid is a partner of theirs at NH Legal Assistance, where she served on the board, they will be collaborating with her to host this informational event. As lawyers, they are the ones who handle the annulments, making their involvement essential to the process.
