Learn how an EEG is used to detect electrical activity in your brain! We’ll also use Python to analyze, visualize, & interpret our data.

Neurons in your brain are constantly producing waves of electrical activity. The patterns of these brain waves change depending on what you are doing, thinking, and feeling. Neuroscientists use a variety of technologies to listen in on brain waves. These technologies have made it possible for people to control devices with their brain activity (often called brain-computer-interface), and for healthcare providers to identify electrical activity linked with brain diseases. In this workshop, you will learn how an electroencephalogram (EEG) is used to detect waves of electrical activity in your brain. Instructors will use the <a href="https://backyardbrains.com/products/heartandbrainspikerbox" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Heart and Brains Spikerbox</a> from <a href="https://backyardbrains.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Backyard Brains</a> to demonstrate an at-home EEG recording. You will also learn how to use Python, a popular programming language, to analyze and interpret EEG data. We will turn these data into custom stylistic visualizations. You will learn how to develop a workflow that involves recording real-world data and preparing it for further analysis, essential skills for any scientist. Participants in the class will leave with a working knowledge of how to use an at-home EEG kit for gauging one’s alertness and focus.Your registration gets you access to the live Zoom class, along with a recording of the class to view afterwards. <h3>Meet the Instructor </h3>Jozsef Meszaros (he/him) has a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School and a PhD in Neuroscience from Columbia University. As a law student, Jozsef published independent research in which he explored how neurobiological evidence of physical and psychological abuse could be used to diminish the culpability of some criminal defendants. His PhD thesis focused on measuring dopamine release into the external globus pallidus an area of the brain that is important for refining motor movements. Jozsef has created and taught courses at Bard College, CUNY, and Columbia, and he enjoys developing interactive science curricula for students.

<h3>Meet the Instructor </h3>Pia O'Neill (she/her) has a PhD in Neuroscience from Columbia University where she discovered altered patterns of brain activity that may be important for understanding schizophrenia. Pia is enthusiastic about making technical research activities accessible to the public, and builds EEG instruments suitable for hobbyist use. In addition to teaching at Genspace, she has taught a combination of biology, physics, and earth sciences to Columbia University undergraduate students. Pia currently works as a postdoctoral scientist investigating the neural mechanisms of emotion.
