About this event

Learn how to operate a Super 8 camera in this analog filmmaking class. Students will learn about the basics of film types and mechanical operations of the camera. Next, students will practice loading film into the camera and learn how to find frames through the view finder, focus, and meter using a mechanical light meter and/or their phone apps. Students will take turns shooting a roll of film together that will then be processed, scanned, and sent to them after the class is completed.

The cost of this class includes one roll of Super 8 film ($32) and fees associated with processing and scanning ($55).

This class is taught by Alchemy artist-in-resdience Abigail Hendrix. Abigail is a writer, photographer, and filmmaker based in Brooklyn, NY. Our class offerings taught by artists-in-residence are developed by the visiting artists and are informed by their artistic practice. This is the only time this class will be offered at Alchemy, and the first ever filmmaking class we have offered!

This is a two-part class taking place on Saturday 4/27 and Saturday 5/4 from 3-6pm.

This class is held in the print studio in the main art building on the AAC campus. Directions and parking information will be included in your confirmation email.

Registration: Please register early if you are able, as it helps us to assure that classes meet their minimums in order to run! If you register more than three weeks before this class begins, a 20% early bird discount will automatically be applied to your ticket at checkout.

A Note on Ticket Pricing: We are experimenting with offering sliding scale tickets in order to keep our classes accessible to as many community members as possible. There are three price tiers. Sustaining tickets help us continue to invest in programming. Full price tickets cover the costs associated with running classes. Accessibility tickets are priced below what it costs for us to run a class. If the cost of a full price ticket is a hardship, we encourage you to purchase a sliding scale ticket. If you can pay the full price or sustaining price, please choose that option so we can keep providing arts programming to the community.

Tuition Assistance: Tuition assistance is available for Alchemy classes and workshops if finances are a barrier. Apply for tuition assistance here.
