About this event

Clothing is a constant part of all our lives, yet most of us know very little about how our clothing is made and its impact on our world.

Join us for a fireside chat focused on the business of clothing and its global impact with local journalist, Elizabeth Segran, a senior staff writer at Fast Company where she writes about fashion & sustainability.

Over the course of the evening, we’ll dig into what fast fashion is, how to shop in a sustainable way, and how to think about luxury labels. We’ll also have a wider discussion about the role of clothing in our lives.

Who we are and who you are: We’re two friends who started the Isabella evenings when we moved back to Boston from San Francisco and London, respectively a few years ago. We wanted to create a space for millennials to connect, have fascinating conversations, and engage with all the exciting knowledge that’s being created here in our home city. We exist for that 20- to 40-something who is hoping to meet someone new while learning something new. We want an Isabella evening to feel like a mix of a magical dinner party with strangers and a podcast that speaks to your mind and heart. Join us! It will be fun, we promise :)

What is an Isabella Evening: Inspired by our local patron-of-the-arts-extraordinaire, Isabella Stewart Gardner, the Isabella Evening is intended to capture Isabella’s own “energetic intellectual curiosity” through an illuminating gathering of local thinkers and inquisitive guests. Our goal is to bridge connections with Bostonians across industries and interests, bringing Boston residents closer to each other and the knowledge that’s being produced in our city.

What to expect: Isabella evenings are designed to help you meet your neighbors and connect more deeply with the community in Boston via deep, engaging conversations with local thinkers. As you enter, you’ll meet other interesting, local guests and enjoy small bites and a drink before a short 30 minute fireside chat, followed by Q&A. We’ll close with time for mingling & encourage conversations on the remarks we’ve just heard. We hope you’ll walk away with your mind expanded and having had inspiring conversations that spark curiosity and connection. We ask you to bring an open mind and a willingness to engage with thoughtfulness & authenticity!

More about Elizabeth Segran: Elizabeth Segran spent her childhood in Brussels, Paris, Singapore, and Jakarta. She attended Columbia University, then got a Ph.D. in Indian literature and women’s studies from the University of California, Berkeley. In addition to her writing at Fast Company, her work has appeared in a wide range of publications, including The Atlantic, The Nation, Foreign Policy, and the New Republic. She lives in Boston with her husband, two daughters, and books.
