An Introduction to Team-Based Learning

In this session, participants will learn about Team-Based Learning and its applications.

Team-Based Learning (TBL) is a collaborative learning strategy in which content modules are taught in three phases: individual preparation, in-class readiness testing, and team application exercises. TBL was developed for use in an MBA program, but has since been adapted to various disciplines including the health sciences. Students in a TBL course join permanent teams and complete guided readings prior to class meetings. Each module begins with individual and group tests on assigned material. In subsequent sessions, teams apply content to analyze data and/or develop responses to case studies. TBL can be used effectively in classes of all sizes, and can achieve greater gains in both content knowledge and professional and interpersonal skill development than traditional lecture. Independent reading assignments and team obligations confer a sense of responsibility and induce student engagement. Productive group work further fosters the development of creative thinking, verbal communication, and negotiation skills. TBL increases intrinsic motivation and perceived competence, and is among several active learning strategies shown to support student persistence in STEM fields. This workshop will introduce the rationale behind TBL and review the basic framework and best practices for a TBL course. Participants will form groups to work through a sample TBL module, including individual and team readiness assessment tests and an application exercise. Each group will then be tasked with developing an outline and draft materials to guide a TBL module in their area of interest.Facilitated by Carolyn Martineau (College of Science and Health).
