What propels us forward, singly and in like-minded company? When daily life slips its track, how does movement step in to keep time, week by week? This presentation of dances has its roots in a Saturday ritual: two hours in a rented Soho loft for class among friends. In the quiet days of 2020, as the city’s dance studios remained shuttered, this small gathering was a lifeline, a connection to normalcy and to each other. In the years since, we have continued on, no longer out of necessity but because it feels, quite simply, like a gift.
Past the lobby door leading up to the Soho loft, a handwritten sign points the way: the word Dance beside a doodle of a staircase. In a sense, this little talisman reflects how we collectively think about dance as a lifelong discipline—onward, upward. We decided to mount a show, recasting Saturday class as rehearsal for nine. The choreographer Oliver Steele—our teacher over these years—has created three new works. A few dancers are performing individual pieces as well. It’s a public window into a private sphere, and we’re so happy to welcome you in.
Dancers Bonnie Crotzer, Brie Welch, Emily Giovine, Eva Alt, Krissy Jones,Laura Regensdorf, Lauren Gerrie, Marisa Competello, and Morgan Griffin
