Mental health care occupies a vast space in society. For billions who suffer from emotional and psychological ailments, drug-based solutions represent the standard method of therapy, which may prove more hurtful than helpful in the short- and long-term.
Amygdala Notes is a new concert-and-conversation series that opens a space for inclusive dialogue about mental health and drug safety. It has three goals: (1) to confront established approaches to mental health care, particularly drug-based therapies, (2) to acknowledge intersections among music, emotion, and the mind, and (3) to encourage public interest in rethinking medical paradigms by using music as an access point. 
At the inaugural event, <A HREF="https://mobile.nytimes.com/2017/09/11/well/mind/paxil-antidepressants-suicide.html?referer" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Wendy Dolin</A> discusses Akathisia and her work as the founder of <A HREF="http://missd.co/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">MISSD</A>, a Chicago-based non-profit that builds awareness about Akathisia and medication-induced suicides. Zachary Pulse (oboe), <A HREF="http://www.jenniferbeattie.com/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Jennifer Beattie (soprano)</A>, and <A HREF="http://adammarks.com/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Adam Marks (piano)</A> frame her discussion with a selection of works that explore intersections among music, emotion, and the mind.
