The American Language Program (ALP) Winter Conference is an annual conference on English language instruction.

The American Language Program (ALP) Winter Conference is a professional development event for practicing language educators, researchers, and graduate and doctoral students aimed at enriching their pedagogical practice in teaching. Although primarily focused on English as a Second Language (ESL/TESOL/ELT) education in academic settings, educators teaching other languages or in other educational contexts may find the presentations relevant and applicable to their teaching.The title and theme of the 2023 conference is Assessment for Learning. Previous conferences have focused on:<ul><li>learning and teaching grammar (2022)</li><li>professional development (2021)</li><li>curricula &amp; materials (2020)</li><li>teaching learners how to learn (2019)</li><li>vocabulary acquisition (2018)</li><li>pronunciation pedagogy (2017)</li><li>critical thinking in language teaching and learning (2016)</li><li>critical thinking in writing instruction (2015)</li></ul>The conference will begin with a plenary address by ALP Senior Lecturer &amp; Associate Director for Curriculum &amp; Assessment Maria McCormack. Maria McCormack has been teaching in the ALP since 1996. She teaches academic ESL courses ranging from intermediate to advanced and specializes in pronunciation and academic writing. Her research interests include language proficiency scaling and pronunciation features contributing to comprehensibility in a global English-speaking context. Her departmental work involves developing project-based courses, analyzing performance test scores using Many-Facet Rasch Measurement, and ensuring alignment between course goals, curriculum, and student achievement.
